Saxophonist Dave Rempis continues his ongoing series of saxophone drum duets at The Whistler with legendary percussionist and frequent collaborator Avreeayl Ra.

Rempis and Ra have developed an intimate musical relationship in a wide array of contexts for 15 years now, most often in their collaborative quartet with Jim Baker and Joshua Abrams. Over the course of that time, they’ve delved deep into one another’s inner workings, hashing out an intuitive understanding of one another’s next moves.  In 2021, they documented their more stripped back duo pairing with a pandemic era live-stream concert at Constellation in Chicago, which was later released on Rempis’ Aerophonic imprint on a limited edition vinyl LP pressing titled Bennu.  This is a rare chance to catch the duo pairing live however!

Known across the jazz spectrum for his decades of work with artists from cutting-edge explorers like Fred Anderson, Nicole Mitchell, and William Parker to more mainstream legends like Von Freeman, Clark Terry, and Donald Harrison, Spencer has become a Chicago jazz mainstay.  Nowadays, he's taken on a crucial role as an educator serving as a teacher and mentor for a nonprofit organization called Youth Guidance, and as a percussion teacher and assistant band director at New Trier High School.
