A native of Sierra Leone, jazz pianist Leon Lewis-Nicol draws on his West African heritage and Christian faith to shape a distinctive improvisational and compositional voice. Now an active bandleader and in-demand sideman, he has performed with his own groups and with ensembles such as Michael Mwenso and the Shakes, including a debut at Lincoln Center. Trained in both classical and jazz traditions through studies at Millikin University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he combines rigorous technique with soulful, story-driven playing that resonates with audiences in concert halls, clubs, and festivals alike.
