Chicago-based saxophonist and composer Greg Wahl’s latest collaboration with singer/songwriter Julia Minkin explores the theme of “a sense of place”. Greg’s atmospheric original compositions paired with Julia’s personal and poignant lyrics make this band a mesmerizing experience for the listener. The group’s distinctive sound draws from a number of stylistic influences including contemporary jazz, folk, and popular music, and features distinguished musicians Andrew Sudhibhasilp (guitar), Stefan Lenthe (bass), and Devin Drobka (drums).
“Over the past decade of my life, I’ve done a lot of moving back and forth between the U.S. and Europe, primarily between Chicago and Marseille, which I called home for seven years. During that time, much of my journaling gravitated around “a sense of place”--my feelings of displacement, my nebulous sense of “home,” but also the excitement of traveling back and forth between time zones, when my senses were briefly heightened and everything felt more vibrant, sharper. I often wished I could hang onto that feeling of “in-between-ness” a little longer. It always feels like fertile ground for creativity. The concept for these lyrics sprang from that. Though they are not directly about my travels, they do gravitate around these themes: a sense of place, an aliveness to one’s surroundings, and all the fertile “in-betweens” we traverse in our lives.” —Julia Minkin
