SemoComeSemo in Roman dialect means “we are what we are”. The project’s idea takes shape from drummer and composer Tommaso Moretti’s need to confront his artistic inspirations. The musical result is a natural reflection of the musician’s life evolution. Decontextualized Italian folk elements find their own way to interact with the Chicago avant-garde context through a balanced formula of open improvisation and detailed composition.Sharp angles of complex rhythms are softened by open hearted melodies inspired by the the pastel colors of the Italian 60’s surrealism movie scene.Time illusions and nostalgic harmonies are used by the musicians as a tool to open a gate and connect with the poetry of that dreamy dimension and its goofy characters.
Tommaso Moretti is a drummer, composer, educator born and raised in Italy where he began to play drums at the age of 10. As a teenager he plays in different rock bands in his small hometown, but his musical career starts when he moved to Rome and become part of the city’s vibrant music scene. Between 2004 and 2013 he published albums and toured internationally with four bands: Thrangh , an avant/rock quartet, Tribraco a punk/jazz trio , The Orange Man Theory a noise-core combo and Underdog an indie jazz rock/world music ensamble. Busy as a musician and music educator in Italy he also cultivated international collaboration in Chicago (where he founded the math/rock band Tasty Gasoline and became part of Ben Lamar Gay’s project Tones for Tales) and in London where he joined (with Tribraco) the “Match and Fuse” project (a European network of experimental musicians and bands promotion) and founded the Italian/British jazz-rock quartet Bulldog Drummond.
In late 2013 he moved permanently in Chicago where he’s now freelancing as jazz drummer and artistically involved with several local music projects spanning from jazz , avanguarde, rock, Brazilian music. In 2017 he released a record for band Bottle Tree on the label International Anthem. Frequently collaborators include Ben Lamar Gay, Rob Frye, Renè Baker, Pharez Whitted, Bobby Broom, Mark Hardy, Will Faber, Andrew Longaker, Matt Piet, Jake Wark, Steve Kaiser, Aaron M.
