Every Tuesday we present Chicago’s top jazz artists in a lively atmosphere, full of cocktail-shaking and spirited conversation.
New Context is a groove-forward jazz project that voyages between the avante garde and ’90s hip-hop beats. They draw inspiration from torchbearers like Robert Glasper, the Soulquarians, and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, to name a few. Born from the ashes of a dissolved live hip hop band, the Chicago-based four-piece rebranded to embrace more exploratory, funkier directions. They’re led by drummer Ryan Lehrman, who studied under bass legend Richard Davis (Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, Ahmad Jamal) during his time at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Their second single will drop late January in anticipation of their upcoming EP, which is due Summer 2018.
