Every Tuesday we present Chicago’s top jazz artists in a lively atmosphere, full of cocktail-shaking and spirited conversation.
Lucas Gillan’s Many Blessings has spent the past decade refining their unique group sound, melding melodic compositions, free-wheeling improvisations and insistent grooves, and playing for audiences at Chicago venues including the Green Mill, Constellation and the 2018 Chicago Jazz Festival. Their new album, Chit-Chatting With Herbie, celebrates the music of under-appreciated pianist and composer Herbie Nichols. It was released on January 3, 2019, Nichols’ 100th birthday, and has received critical acclaim from local and international press. Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen called it “a meaty and meaningful release that does both Gillan and his musicians and Nichols proud,” and Stereogum’s Phil Freeman noted the album’s “lurching, bluesy feel with lots of melodic twists and turns.” It follows the 2017 release of Many Blessings’ debut, Arroyo, which consisted entirely of original compositions.
For this show, Many Blessings will be playing a mix of music by Herbie Nichols, as well as originals both old and new.
