Tasting Table — The Best Cocktails of 2010 Tasting Table — Chicago — Best Cocktails of 2010 Elk's Own This low-key, multipurpose bar is one of the city's best cocktail destinations thanks to the exacting Paul McGee, whose sophisticated drinks are rooted in classics. According to drinks historian David Wondrich, the Elk's Own dates back to 1901. Here, McGee adds a slight twist--and a subtle bitterness--in the form of Cynar, and the use of bourbon instead of rye whiskey. Walnut liquer Ice 1 1/2 ounces bourbon 1/2 ounes ruby port 1/4 ounce Cynar 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice 1/2 ounce simple syrup 1 egg white Rinse old-fashioned glass with walnut liqueur, if using. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the spirits, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white. Shake for 15 seconds, strain through a mesh strainer into the prepared glass, and serve.

Elk's Own

This low-key, multipurpose bar is one of the city's best cocktail destinations thanks to the exacting Paul McGee, whose sophisticated drinks are rooted in classics. According to drinks historian David Wondrich, the Elk's Own dates back to 1901. Here, McGee adds a slight twist--and a subtle bitterness--in the form of Cynar, and the use of bourbon instead of rye whiskey.

Walnut liquer
Ice
1 1/2 ounces bourbon
1/2 ounes ruby port
1/4 ounce Cynar
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
1 egg white

Rinse old-fashioned glass with walnut liqueur, if using. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the spirits, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white. Shake for 15 seconds, strain through a mesh strainer into the prepared glass, and serve.
